How to Use Spinrite Hard Drive Diagnostics Boot ISO on Your PC
Spinrite is a powerful tool for repairing, maintaining, and recovering data from hard drives and SSDs. It can scan your drive for errors, fix bad sectors, recover lost files, and optimize performance. Spinrite can run on any Intel/AMD PC system, regardless of the operating system installed.
However, to use Spinrite, you need to boot your PC from a different media, such as a CD or a USB drive. This is because Spinrite needs direct access to the drive hardware, which is not possible when the drive is in use by the operating system. In this article, we will show you how to create a bootable Spinrite ISO and use it on your PC.
What You Need
A copy of Spinrite 6.0, which you can purchase from GRC.
A blank CD or a USB drive with at least 256 MB of space.
A PC with a CD/DVD burner or a USB port.
A software to burn the ISO file to the CD or USB drive, such as ImgBurn or Rufus.
How to Create a Bootable Spinrite ISO
Spinrite 6.0 comes with a built-in utility called InitDisk that can create a bootable ISO file with FreeDOS, a free and open source operating system that can run Spinrite. FreeDOS is compatible with most PC hardware and BIOS settings.
To create a bootable Spinrite ISO, follow these steps:
Download the InitDisk utility from GRC.
Open an administrator command prompt on your Windows PC.
Navigate to the folder where you downloaded InitDisk.exe.
Type initdisk freedos and press Enter.
The utility will ask you to select a drive letter for the ISO file. Choose any available letter and press Enter.
The utility will create a bootable ISO file named freedos.iso in the same folder as InitDisk.exe.
You can now burn this ISO file to a CD or USB drive using your preferred software.

Restart your PC and enter the BIOS setup menu. You can usually do this by pressing a key such as F2, F10, F12, or Del during the boot process.
Change the boot order so that your PC boots from the CD or USB drive first.
Save the changes and exit the BIOS setup menu.
Your PC will boot from the Spinrite ISO and load FreeDOS.
You will see a command prompt with a message saying Welcome to FreeDOS!
Type spinrite and press Enter.
The Spinrite program will start and ask you to select a drive to scan.
Select the drive you want to scan and press Enter.
The program will ask you to select a scan level. You can choose from 1 to 5, depending on how thorough you want the scan to be. Level 1 is the fastest but least comprehensive, while level 5 is the slowest but most comprehensive. You can also press F1 for more information about each level.
Select a scan level and press Enter.
The program will start scanning your drive and display its progress and status on the screen. You can also press F1 for more information about what it is doing.
When the scan is complete, the program will show you a summary of its results and any errors it found and fixed.
You can press Esc to exit the program and return to FreeDOS. 248dff8e21
